Wearcam version 3 is based on a Fujitsu Stylistic 1200 pen
tablet computer. I chose the Stylistic because of long battery run time,
and a rugged case. It is also cool that you don't have to "open it up" to
use it, nor does it need a keyboard or external mouse.
The Stylistic 1200 has
a 120 MHz Pentium, 32 MB RAM, a 2.1 GB shock-mounted hard drive,
and 8 inch diagonal transflective
monochrome screen. With an extra-capacity battery, the Stylistic provides
3.5-4 hours of wireless webcam operation. I have placed the Stylistic in its "hazardous environment case" that provides soft foam protection with a nylon
outer covering, but still allows you to see the screen and use the pen through
a see-through plastic screen cover. For wireless Internet connectivity, we use a Sierra
Aircard 350 CDPD modem. For video, we use a Nogatech USB Micro Cam, which
provides a suprisingly good image.
The Stylistic is a bit heavier
and larger than the (keyboard-closed) Ricoh Magio of wireless webcam
version 2, but it's extra run time, functionality, and strength make it a
much better choice.
